The Way You Run in Dreams and yourself will be featured in the April 2018 episode of Write Now. It will air in Haverhill, MA on Tuesdays @ 8 p.m., and Wednesdays @ 7 a.m., 11 a.m., and 4 p.m. You may watch it at those times from your computer through the "Watch Live" option on Haverhill Community TV's website. When the dates/times become available for the other 3 markets, I'll send you an email. Sometime in May, it should be on my subsection of the HCTV website. I'll send you the link when it's up.

I previewed the episode and was very pleased with the interview. You were thoughtful, as always, and gave positive advice to others wishing to publish. Congrats on publishing your first poetry book!

---The Friost Hoot this past tuesday was fun....
    Grey Court Poets were the feature, and there was still time for the open mic.
    There were a few tribtes to Mark Schorr,.
    I shoulda taken more notes.....Tom Wylie sets a good example as correspondent..



I have a report on Saturday's Powow reading from Tom Wylie, who also
   popped up for the first time at the Frost Hoot....
Due to the freezing water forecast, I chickened out, but Tom made it:

Funny man poet Chris O'Carrroll  enthralled us with a dozen 

or more poems of an eclectic nature.  But all very funny!! 

 He began  with "again today," a sad yet humorous vignette about 

his mother's dementia, and his dealing with her complete inability to

 recognize him "again."  Then on to "Burn this Poem," 

"My Pussy Hat," "Father Willy," and a series of one liners in

 "Resolutions," on how to prepare himself for 2018.

   Really, a very poetic and entertaining reading.

And, he will be guest poet for the Haverhill River Bards on Friday, April 6th

David Davis, Poet in Residence at the Joppa Flats Audubon 

Center, read all of his short poems in his recently published 

"Joy Poems," after telling us it takes 18 minutes to read the book. 

 But each was slowly and beautifully delivered as he described his main

 companion, "Joy," as she accompanied him on his daily activities with 

a constant reminder to allow each day to have 5 full minutes of joy.

  Not 4:40, or 2:39, but a full 5 minutes.  Each short poem was 

in some small way connected to this goal, and part of his 20 year struggle 

with living and being treated for prostrate cancer. 

 Davis has a warm and inviting reading voice that filled the 

room with poetic enjoyment.

Here are the bios of the featured readers:

Gayle C. Heney is a former North Andover 2-term Poet Laureate.
She is the award winning producer and host of the TV series
Write Now. She is the editor of the poetry anthology Songs
from the Castle’s Remains and Lois Sargent’s Leaf Sorrow
Tree Strong, which will be published by early 2018. Her poems
have appeared in Moments Falling Open, MethuenLife, The
Underground Movement, and Northern Essex Community College’s
Peace Poetry Contest chapbooks. Gayle Heney has taught poetry
at the Peabody Essex Museum, libraries, senior centers,
schools, Essex Art Center, Rolling Ridge Conference Center,
 Salem Arts Festivals, retirement communities,
  Cape Ann Museum and MA Poetry’s Student Day of Poetry.


A native of Lexington, Kentucky, Joy Gonsalves
earned a Master of Fine Arts in Poetry from the
University of Florida and spent the first few years
of her career teaching Introduction to Literature,
Poetry, and Composition at various schools and universities,
including our own Northern Essex.  She is the recipient of
an Individual Artist Grant from the KY Foundation for Women,
a Walker Scholarship from the Fine Arts Work Center in
Provincetown, and a Cave Canem (pronounced KAH-ve KAH-nem)
felllowship.  Her poems have appeared in Verse, Mosaic,
The Independent, Crab Orchard Review, and other journals.
A wife and mother of three children, Joy currently
homeschools her two youngest.  She will be reading
from a series of poems inspired by her childhood,
 which is the setting for her first (and forthcoming)
  full-length collection. 


Remaining time will be divided for the open mic quantity,
   and we will be trying out a timer to assure that
   run-ons don't wipe out our time for announcements.

A bit far afield but a great event.
Deborah Warren was as quick-witted as ever, and
Juster was quite the character.   I didn't have time to do
a poetry/music sync-up with Warren's "Elizabeth's Dress"
and Daft Punk's "Get Lucky", but I did have a lot of fun with
my "Ode To A Falling Tree" and Jan Hanford's "Delirious".
The next Powow reading will be January 13th, 3pm,

---LAST RIVER BARD SHOW FOR A WHILE-----


Charles Coe  was an awesome feature.
We got the open mic underway while he was lost in Haverhill...
He made up ground quckly, with awesome recollections,
some blues singing, and even playing (one of many) 
his didgeridoo !    There were spirited and heartfelt pieces
all around, and it was a family thing at times.
There was a little tike dancing to the didgeridoo,
a group of high-schoolers, a sing-a-long where I got to do
a Beatles accent thing, Some folk playing by Susan (ne) LaFortune's
new husband, and maybe a convert to visit the Grey Court Poets.
(coming up this coming Monday!)

There will be a gap, and they will start things up in spring some time,
Tom Wylie tells me.   Maybe they can get some hosts to share the duty
sometimes, make a monthly thing of it.
Tom seemed excited about maybe  having a combined-groups activity
   some day.  Haverhill might be a good option, since there is an active
   night scene and some community arts space coming on line...

-------------THE IMPORTANCE OF MARK SCHORR---------

It was great to see the plaque to Mark Schorr
being dedicated at the Lawrence Public Library,
and to see Natalie Schorr's appreciation of all
the people in the room.

The thing is, most of the people in the room have,
over the years, received Mark's direct personal
interest, support, consolation and consultation, as citizen poets.
This is in the true spirit of the 'hoots' he loved so much.

Whether it was helping many of us
'involuntary/natural' poets on making our books, or
cajoling various people to step through the fear and
write and stand and present,
or shuttling and phoning around to promote poetry
in general,  he was developing just about everyone.

You can't teach or mentor a poet per se;
you have to take an interest in what gets each one going,
what they need and when, and wait for the harvest.
I was fumbling around for words like 'father' or 'friend'
or 'leader', but nothing quite fit.  I like to think that
he was a "gardener", and I try (in my own way)  to
do something like that live, to spur on the flavors I find
 at the hoots.  People find themselves, and explain themselves,
 at this events and through poetry. There is some ancient purpose.

So...it's no wonder Natalie was lifted a bit by all of us
at the Frost ceremony and reading....
She was looking out across a garden Mark tilled and fed.
We personally grow on poetically, to this day.

So, even though I develop my own sometimes crazy flavors,
I am always thinking of how to make hoot events about
you, whoever you are, and how we can find the best
you've got.  The "All Literation Nation" idea adds the concept
that we can all move around and spur each other on.

Refining the discovery and expression of true, original,
deep thoughts has never been more important than now.
What Mark Schorr did for all of us should happen so much more
often everywhere. People running events  all around us
can be gardeners, too.  They already know the awesome
characters and words that show up on their shores.

Maybe this was the rich village life talking around the fire
that we are missing these days...people growing each other.
It all starts with taking a personal interest in our neighbors,
if Mark's example holds true. Poets are needed now, not to
forget all Mark's past activism.
Let's grow a nation.

Fun open mic in the N.Andover library tonight...

Mark Bohrer, Gayle Heney, Ken D., myself, Helena Minton, Geoffrey,
   Doug Lowney (hes rotating stock...different ones tonight than at Merrimac,  and more...

I got more practice on the "All Literation Nation" rap,
and revived "Neon Love" to warm up for tomorrow's
   to-do at Merrimack College  (Rogers Center,  12:30 pm).

Reminder:  This Friday (10/27) in the Lawrence Public Library
6:30 : dedication to Mark Schorr, 3rd floor, in the Frost Room
7:00 : The annual community read  (luminaries reading favorites or their own,
                 a Kenadine Jazz Fantasia tapdance students show!)

---------AND ON TO THE MERRIMAC MIC!--------------------------

The most far-flung corner of the All-Literation Nation,
but surprisingly quick to get to.   I went to the open mic today
 (Sunday) at the Merrimac Public Library, 10:30am..
Just past Haverhill on 495, Rte.110 ...3 miles or so...and there you are.
Isabel VanMerlin says the November and December open mics will be
  3rd Sundays, not 4th Sundays, so as to avoid clashing with the holidays.

Quite an assortment of talent, including 3 Powows (from Newburyport)

I got to do my "All Literation Nation" rap again, and I tossed in
an impromptu/ad-hoc piece with audience call-n-response called
"I'm On My Way, But I'm Not There Yet", riffing on Isabel's message
 to the early birds.  That was a lot of Existential fun.  There was some
  awesome high eloquence, philosophy, and a great quasi-rabbinical piece.
  Given the awesome acoustics, high rafters, Sunday timing, and food treats,
  it was almost like "Sunday got ta meetin' time"......
  And Doug Lowney was another waderer there.....as usuall, quite entertaining.

 
COMING RIGHT UP:    Tuesday4Poetry, this tuesday, 7pm !!!
    (thanks for reminding me Gayle ....  my calender didn't have it yet)

And...I have to whip up audio loops for Wednesday's performance of
   "Neon Love"  (to be added to the All-Literation rap) at 12:30 Wednesday
   , Merrimac College (N.Andover) .    CJ will be there, and Gayle, but not sure
    who else.  Dang, that's a big stage!

It doesn't appear right away, but I moderate it.....to eliminate...Nigerian lawyers,
  Moldovan Brides, Indian virus spammers, Russian trolls....that sort of thing)...

I'm hoping to run a few contests with that....
C'mon....it's easy...it's just a blog!   You might have to recognize street signs
   or words in a Captcha pop-up....that's all.

I went to the event ( Friday, September 29th,  from 7pm to 9pm..
Awesome....very nice Coffee shop, right on the main drag in Haverhill,
     good PA equipment and hosting, some great local flavor, and some
     familiar faces were there ...T.Cremin and S.Lafortune..
I had heartburn when I got there, and their
      whole-wheat / ricotta / crisp-pear-slice / honey open sandwich
       was a miraculous fix.....they have various pastries and treats there.  

Richard Smyth is rallying the series.  They don't have a regular monthly
     schedule, there are two more in this series!

OCTOBER 20th, another reading/open-mic, featuring our friend
     Tim Cremins  (also at the Battle Grounds, a peacable place)

NOVEMBER 3rd another reading/open-mic, featuring   Charles Coe
     (also at the Battle Grounds)
